What’s In Your Water?

Water Quality Solutions for Greensboro & the Triad

Most homeowners don’t think twice about turning on the tap, but what’s actually in that water matters more than many people realize. We’re Johns Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning, Water Purification and Electrical, a family-owned business that’s been serving Greensboro and the Triad since 1974. Over the past five-plus decades, we’ve helped more than half a million customers across the community.

  • Our team is fully licensed and insured.
  • We back our work with a warranty. Whether you’re calling about a plumbing issue or a water quality concern.
  • We answer the phone 24/7.
  • We offer same-day and emergency service throughout Greensboro, Kernersville, and the broader Triad.

Water purification is part of our full-service model alongside plumbing, HVAC, and electrical. In 2002, we launched Dr. Johns H2O Water Purification, our sister company dedicated entirely to water treatment solutions.

Many Greensboro homeowners aren’t fully aware of what their tap water contains. Minerals that contribute to hard water, disinfection byproducts, and trace contaminants can all be present at levels that meet legal standards but still exceed independent health guidelines. Municipal water treatment here begins at Lake Brandt, Lake Townsend, and Lake Higgins and is processed at the Mitchell Treatment Water Plant and the Townsend Water Treatment Plant, respectively. That treatment addresses many issues but doesn’t remove everything, which is why dedicated water purification can be an important part of protecting your home systems.

Wondering what’s coming out of your tap? Call us at (336) 932-8643 and we can help you choose the right starting point for water quality in your Greensboro home.

What Greensboro Homeowners Should Know About Their Water

Greensboro’s municipal water comes from three surface water sources: Lake Brandt, Lake Townsend, and Lake Higgins. It is treated at the Mitchell and Townsend Water Treatment Plants before it reaches your home.

While treatment significantly improves water quality,  it doesn’t eliminate every contaminant that may be present. Understanding what’s in your water is the first step toward choosing a water purification solution that actually fits your home, your family, and your budget.

Hard water, driven by elevated levels of calcium and magnesium, is common throughout the Piedmont Triad. You may notice it as scale buildup on fixtures, cloudy glassware, reduced lather from soap, or shortened lifespans for your water heater, dishwasher, or washing machine.

Disinfection byproducts are another concern for water quality in Greensboro. Chlorine and chloramines are added during municipal treatment to control bacteria, and while that step is important, it can leave an unpleasant taste and odor. Chloramines pose a particular filtration challenge because standard carbon filters don’t always reduce them effectively. Emerging contaminants such as PFAS compounds, often called forever chemicals because they don’t break down in the environment, have been detected in water supplies across North Carolina. Well water customers in the Triad face a different set of issues, including bacteria, iron, sediment, sulfur, and other naturally occurring contaminants.

How Can We Help You?

Water Treatment Solutions Through Dr. Johns H2O

Our sister company, Dr. Johns H2O Water Purification, has focused exclusively on water treatment since 2002. As an authorized Kinetico dealer serving the Triad, Dr. Johns H2O offers systems designed around how water behaves, not electrical timers. Kinetico systems use the kinetic energy of moving water to operate, meaning no electrical components to fail and continued operation even during a power outage.

Dr. Johns H2O provides a free water analysis to identify the specific conditions and contaminants in your home’s supply before recommending any system. Their full range of water treatment services includes:

  • Whole-House Water Filtration: Treats all water at the point of entry into the home, addressing contaminants before they reach any fixture or appliance
  • Reverse Osmosis Systems: Point-of-use filtration, typically installed under the kitchen sink, designed to reduce dissolved solids, certain heavy metals, PFAS, and a wide range of other contaminants
  • Water Softeners: Remove calcium and magnesium ions to address hard water and protect pipes, appliances, and fixtures from scale
  • Chloramine-Reducing Water Systems: Specifically designed to address the filtration challenges chloramines present
  • Drinking Water Systems: Dedicated solutions for cleaner, great-tasting drinking water at the tap
  • Water Analysis & Testing: Professional testing to identify what’s actually present in your water supply so you can make informed choices
  • Commercial Water Treatment: Solutions scaled for business applications throughout Greensboro and the Triad
  • Bottleless Water Coolers: A practical alternative to bottled water for home or office use

Look Up What’s in Your Local Water Supply

The Environmental Working Group maintains a Tap Water Database that compiles water quality test results from utilities across the country, including providers throughout North Carolina. Unlike federal reporting, which flags only contaminants that exceed legal limits, the EWG database applies its own health-based guidelines, which are often more stringent. The result is a clearer picture of what’s present in your water at levels that may be worth knowing about, even when they’re technically legal.

The City of Greensboro’s utility, which serves over 318,000 people, is included in the database. Contaminants documented above EWG health guidelines in North Carolina utilities include total trihalomethanes, haloacetic acids, PFOA, PFOS, and hexavalent chromium, among others. You can search by utility or location to see specific results for your address and better understand your local water quality.

Find Out What’s In Your Water

Once you know what’s in your tap water, our team and Dr. Johns H2O can help you decide whether a treatment solution makes sense for your home. Call (336) 932-8643 to get started or to request a free water analysis for your Greensboro property.

"I couldn't be more satisfied with the service I received"

I'm Brad B. and I want to give a shout-out to service tech's Aaron and John. My well pump died on 8/31. I called John's and was advised the on-call tech would get in touch with me. No more than 15 minutes later, Aaron called and was on the way. He made sure it was in fact the pump that was the problem and worked up a quote. I accepted and he went to get the parts. He returned with John and they both repaired my problems. Both were very professional and explained everything they were doing. I couldn't be more satisfied with the service I received. John's will definitely get all my business in the future and I will highly recommend John's to my friends and family.
